Healthcare Workers Give a Loud YES to New, Strong Healthcare Union

Members Approve New Union By 97%-3% Margin in Large Turnout Vote

Nearly 13,000 healthcare workers voted to unite into the country’s largest healthcare union local, SEIU Healthcare Illinois Indiana. The votes for unification and a new constitution still has to be certified by SEIU President Andy Stern; that action is expected in June or early July.

When nursing home, hospital, home and child care workers vote this spring to unify all Illinois healthcare workers into a single, powerful voice for change, the new union will become the largest, most powerful healthcare local in the country.

After months of operating without a 2008 budget, the Cook County Board passed a budget that does not threaten jobs of hospital workers. SEIU Healthcare Local 20 President Byron Hobbs had called for not only a budget solution, but restoration of last year’s cuts to healthcare delivery services.

Doctors vote to join union

Attending physicians of Provident Hospital voted to form a union with the National Doctors Council of the Service Employees International Union and SEIU Healthcare Local 20, which represents thousands of hospital workers in Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
